About University

The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur [NITDGP] is a public engineering college located at Durgapur in Bardhaman district of West Bengal. Formerly known as Regional Engineering College, it was founded by Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, the then chief minister of West Bengal in 1960. Today it is one of the 30 National Institutes of Technology in India and has been recognised as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. In July 2003, the institution was granted Deemed University status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and was renamed National Institute of Technology, Durgapur.

  • NIT Durgapur is a fully funded technological institution of the Government of India. All  the academic departments of the institute are involved in active research which are mostly sponsored by major government agencies including Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST)
  • The procedure for selection of candidates for admissions to the bachelor degree courses in NIT, as decided by MHRD, is on the basis of JEE conducted by CBSE
  • The Institute is located about 160 KMs north-west of Kolkata on the Howrah-Delhi Main Railway-Route and overlooking the National Highway No. 2. It is a two and a half hours‘ drive from Kolkata airport. Spreading over an area of 187 acres of land, institute is fully residential and presently providing accommodation to 2500 boys and 500 girls.
  • NIT Durgapur offers undergraduate programs in engineering and postgraduate programs in engineering, science and management.

Placement details:  

The placement office facilitates students in securing placements. The placement cell provides all the necessary facilities for the placement and interacts with over 150 industries in the country. Institute has performed quite well in 2013 placement season and placed 485 (approx.) students effortlessly.

Extracurricular: There are many facilities for the students to engage themselves in extra-curricular activities. Various student clubs are setup by the students to organize such activities. Some of them are following-

  • GNU/Linux Users’ Group– The institute has an active Linux Users Group(LUG). The most important event of the group is an annual national level technical symposium on Linux and FOSS, called Mukti. Mukti is the largest event of its kind in Eastern India, and it provides a platform for students nationwide to share their knowledge and intellect.
  • TEAM NDORS– Team NDORS (NIT Durgapur Off-road sports) is the official SAE BAJA team of NIT Durgapur. Baja SAE is an intercollegiate design competition run by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
  • Prakriti Club- It is the Environmental club of NIT Durgapur. The club plays important role to promote awareness especially in the field of environmental issues. This is the only club which conducts the events (Plantation, Green Diwali, Green Art, Marathon (ruNIT), Village tour, Earth Hour) during the entire academic year.
  • Maths N Tech Club- The institute has an active club MNTC which is responsible for holding events round the year which nurtures the intellect of yound and old minds alike. It is a non-profit club of NIT Durgapur and its activities include ANK (its annual “Knowledge Fest”) held around in the months of August–September.
  • NSS (National Service Scheme) – NSS is a society which strives to inculcate good social habits among the students. Its activities include cleaning of the campus, spreading awareness about the environment, visits to nearby slums to improve empathy towards the deprived classes, organizing Blood Donation Camps.

Facilities: NITDGP receives funding of about Rs. 500 million per year from the GOI. The institute provides all world class academic as well as other facilities to its students. The facilities provided at the institute are as follows-

Laboratories

The institute has a high-voltage laboratory, the sixth of its kind in the world and the first in India. There are specialized faculty members and skilled staff members in the fields of high-voltage and high-power engineering.

Library

 The library has a collection of 1.5lac volumes which includes text books, reference books & bound volumes of journals, standards etc and subscribes to about 180 current journals. The book database is accessible through OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue).

Computing Facilities

The whole Institute including the Students’ Hostels and the residential area of the Faculty is connected by a campus wide LAN using high speed Fiber Optic/UTP cables.

The Institute has a dedicated 54 Mbps (34 Mbps BSNL+ 20 Mbps Reliance Com) 24X7 Internet Connectivity, which serves the Institute Internet needs.

Sports Facilities

The Institute has a full-fledged Physical Training Department for the students. Two playing grounds – the Lord’s and the Oval are for outdoor activities like cricket, football and hockey. There are courts for volleyball, basketball and lawn tennis. There is a badminton court present in each hostel.

Medical Facilities

There is a medical unit-cum-hospital with arrangement for both indoor and outdoor treatment of the patients. The medical unit is served by two resident doctors and other medical staff around the clock. For any specialized treatment the patients are referred to the state government hospital situated at the other end of the city.

Other Amenities

A number of stationery shops, shopping complex,  two State Bank of India ATM machines along with a State Bank of India and a Canara Bank branch,gymnasium,guest house etc.

 

Festivals/Events: The Students of NITDGP are also indulged in the cultural festivals organized during the entire academic year. Some of these festivities are following-

  • Recstacy– Popularly known as REX, it is the annual social & cultural festival of National Institute of Technology, Durgapur and is held for 4 nights and 3 days, towards the end of February every year. It draws a footfall of about 8,000 students from colleges across the country.
  • Aarohan- It is the Annual National Techno-Management festival organized by the Institute. Aarohan is organized during even semesters and lasts for four days. It is aimed at technical, arts as well as management students by offering a plethora of events, including lectures, seminars, workshops, competitions etc.

Some other fests include-  Mukti, Motor Zundung, Ank and Verve.

Ranking:

  • The college is ranked among the top 50 engineering and technology colleges in India by surveys done by India Today.

Scholarship:

  • Prof. S.N. Ray Scholarships were instituted as a fellowship based on merits.
